August 3, 2010 - One Sky Center Native Mentorship participants present at Indian Health Service Conference in Sacramento

Members of the Native-to-Native Mentorship program served an active role at the Indian Health Service/Bureau of Indian Affairs sponsored 2010 National Behavioral Health Conference held July 27-29, 2010 in Sacramento, California.

The conference theme, A Shared Vision: Past, Present, and Future, included Mentee Julie Black Elk as a member of the Planning Committee.

Three members of the Mentor group were active participants: Kamilla Venner, PhD presented two Substance Abuse Track Learning Lab Sessions on Evidence-based Motivational Interviewing; and Dee Bigfoot, PhD presented two Substance Abuse Track Learning Lab Sessions on Effects of Trauma on American Indian and Alaska Native Children. Mentorship Program Director, R. Dale Walker, MD, participated at a Plenary Session on Addressing Suicide in Indian Country Panel.

In addition, four Mentees presented twice each as part of the conference's Substance Abuse Track Learning Lab Sessions: Jami Bartgis, PhD, discussed Methamphetamine and Suicide Prevention in Urban Indian Communities, Julie Black Elk, PhD, spoke on Addressing the Special Health Care Needs of Foster Children and Their Families, Integration of Behavioral Health and Creating a Medical Home; Daniel Dickerson, DO, reviewed a program on Utilization of Drumming for American Indians and Alaska Natives with Substance Abuse Disorders; and Michelle Begay, MS, participated on a Plenary Session titled, A Multi-disciplinary Approach to Domestic Violence Care as well as a Learning Lab Session on Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Program (SANE): An Approach to Sexual Assault.

All the Mentors and Mentees agreed to provide One Sky Center copies of their presentations. When received, the presentations will be included on the Mentorship website http://www.oneskycenter.org/projects/nida/ and available to Indian Country.
