A new grant that was received by the Gallup-McKinley Schools to implement Project Venture into 7 local high schools. The grant is from the US Department of Education Safe and Drug Free Schools Program, entitled the Corn Pollen Pathways project. It will implement the Project Venture model into 7 high schools in the district.

High school students will be trained in the model and will then become mentors and role models for mid school students, whom they will work with. The program has an in-school component, where the students at the high schools with learn the program, then adopt a mid school and implement the model there. There is an after school component, as well as weekends and summers. It is a 3 year grant and will impact several hundred students. NIYLP is contracted to provide training and technical assistance in the Project Venture model to all 7 sites. Our staff will assist in implementing the afterschool, outdoor adventure activities, as well as work with groups of elders and develop coalitions of agencies in each community.
