Abstract

The mission of New Hope Counseling Center (NHCC) is to heal, restore, and equip young adults for a life of wholeness and hope. NHCC offers a multimodal approach where the following venues of healing are offered: individual counseling and support groups; one of three post-secondary academic programs; education pertaining to emotional and mental health issues; and a supportive residential community.

Objectives
Goal 1. To develop tools that will assist the participant in obtaining and maintaining sobriety.

Addressed: The participants will be able to acquire tools for obtaining sobriety through the multiple venues that are offered through NHCC. The primary resources will be individual and group counseling; courses pertaining to chemical dependency, peer counseling, sexual abuse, and career counseling; and the opportunity to live in a supportive environment.

Goal 2. To provide participants with a safe living environment.

Addressed: The participants will live in Soldotna, AK. They will live in the residential community of ACC either in a dormitory or multi-bed cabin. They will live 2 per room in the dormitory or 4 per cabin. Housing will not be co-ed. In the dormitory, one floor is for males and another floor is for females. There will be a dean on each floor in the dormitory.

Goal 3. To have participants maintain sobriety throughout treatment.

Addressed: Participants will be asked to abstain while in the program and will sign an agreement. Failure to abstain will result in loss of privileges.

Goal 4. To provide participants with tools for healing from emotional wounds.

Addressed: Participants will be provided individual counseling, support groups, and education related to sexual abuse, grief and loss, and chemical dependency.

Goal 5. To provide participants emotional support through caring and invested staff.

Addressed: Participants will have the support of individual counselors, mentor counselors, and faculty. They will also be divided into groups that will meet monthly in the homes of the staff where they will have the opportunity to receive additional support as well as the atmosphere of spending time with a family.

Goal 6. To provide participants with the opportunity for post-secondary education.

Addressed: Participants will be given the opportunity to attend 1 of 3 programs: a Biblical Studies program, community college or a vocational program.

Goal 7. To provide participants with the resources to make decisions for their next steps after the completion of the program.

Addressed: Participants will attend a course containing a career counseling curriculum and will receive individual counseling regarding career and vocational pursuits.

Evaluation Design
Evaluation of progress will take place every 3 months, and at the completion of the program. The evaluation will be conducted through an interview with the participant and his or her primary care provider. During the evaluation, the following will be addressed: participant strengths, participant concerns, incidents of substance abuse, evaluation of treatment goals, and discussion and recommendations for new, modified, or continuation of goals.

A treatment review will be written by the primary care provider and discussed with the individual. A copy of the report will be kept in the participant’s file. A brief summary of the treatment review including a list of the modified treatment goals and recommendations will be given to the participant upon leaving.

In addition to the treatment reviews, NHCC staff will have the opportunity to self-evaluate their performance and experience. This will take place by completing a questionnaire and discussing the comments with a supervisor. At the close of the program, the participants will also be asked to complete an evaluation of their experience in the program in order for NHCC to evaluate and improve upon the components of the program.

To meet the requirements for the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA), interviews will be conducted using the GPRA data collection instrument. These interviews will take place during intake, at 6 months and at 12 months. This information will be submitted to the appropriate CSAT office via the online submission process.
