Abstract

The New Life Program provides residential treatment to a cohort of 12 youth, ages 12 to 18 with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. A second cohort of shorter duration of treatment is served in a separate program at the Graf Rheeneerhaanjii Center.

Objectives
The primary goal is to assist youth who are using, dependent upon or addicted to drugs, alcohol, and other substances. The objective is to teach a set of life skills that will assist youth in attaining and maintaining a drug and alcohol free lifestyle and how to better manage their emotional and behavioral responses to life’s problems and experiences without the use of such substances.

Key Components
Key components include individual, group, and family counseling, physical exercise, academic school, alcohol and drug education, vocational assessment and counseling, psychological assessment, psycho-social groups, relapse prevention, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

Evaluation Design
70% of the youth admitted to the program graduated or were referred to more intensive treatment.
